History

The organization came about after the exposure of a group of communication and media studies students of the Mindanao State University, Marawi City to fisherfolk communities in the Municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND), Lanao del Norte. The exposure was facilitated by Mindanao Peoples’ Peace Movement (MPPM) and LigangMakabagongKabataan (LMK)-MSU Chapter on March 21 to 24, 2014. Moved by the different level of challenges the communities are facing, i.e. from coastal resource denudation, limited access to social services and landlessness to internal displacement due to political conflict; several participants of the exposure program together with their teachers and the facilitating organizations agreed to organize a meeting that resulted in the formation of “LAWIG” on April 12, 2014. Mindful of the members’ strength and capacity to contribute to the bigger change in the society LAWIG will facilitate the demands of the grassroots communities especially those of the marginalized sectors to reach the concerned agencies and actors in the society through different levels of actions and initiatives.

About us

LAWIG is a vernacular term for “to sail”. The term is commonly used by fisherfolks to refer to ‘traversing the sea or ocean using small boats or “bangka” to catch fish and other sea products which will be sold to the local market or will be consumed by the family.’

Lawig is a campaign and an outreach organization composed mostly of students and teachers/young people from the Mindanao State University, Marawi City. It was formally organized on April 12, 2014.

It was organized to mobilize support for communities affected by economic and political violence. Its main role is to document the issues and problems, engage different agencies and actors to respond to the needs of the communities, and linking and networking like-minded organizations to spread the demands of the affected communities.
