LAWIG Joined ALCOTHANS' Alay sa Kapwa

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
― Charles Dickens

Today, LAWIG together with three other organizations: the Alcothans, Liga ng Makabagong Kabataan, and AKMK went to distribute school supplies, vegetable seeds and give a bit of entertainment to the displaced children (and their parents) at Kaplag, Ubaldo, Iligan City. They have been washed out of their homes by typhoon Agaton and are still struggling to go back to their normal lives. Unfortunately, they have not yet been given the necessary attention and help that they are supposed to get from the authorities. We set out to help them as much as we can, we have given them notebooks, pads of paper, pencils, pens, clays and vegetable seeds but what they gave back to us were priceless ---- their gratitude and smiles. PADAYON SA PAGLAWIG!

Alay sa Kapwa: Back2School Project of ALCOTHANS – EPSILON
A Report
28 May 2014

BRIEF BACKGROUND

It was during Brod Jade Bengua, Brod Jucel Castillo, Brod Manny Salvador and Brod Ryan Gulfo's visit at Brod Vhong’s station in Santiago, Iligan City that the idea to distribute school supplies as a summer ender and back to school project came up last May 18, 2014. It was then agreed to tap possible partner organizations and donors from the fellow ALCOTHANS in EPSILON Chapter and those who are willing to share. The night then, an appeal thru sms and social media came out for the said project.

Tasks were distributed among us not limited to communication to Brods and Sisters including the collection of donations; tapping of possible partners; validation of data; and among other tasks.

THE BENEFICIARY

Earlier in 2014, a 24 households living in Kaplag, Iligan City was hit by the flood and landslide brought by typhoon Agaton. In seek of refuge, temporarily they built shanties and “barung-barungs” along the C3 Road of Kaplag, Ubaldo Laya, Iligan City and up to now, they continued to struggle for services and in rebuilding their lives.

They already lobbied to concern agencies for any means and assistance to help them out. Brod Vhong proposed to make these kids as the beneficiary since they are not so many given the time element of raising for the donations and also as our contribution to lighten their difficulties.

Then, the group agreed and started to beat the drum.

DISTRIBUTION

Earlier in the morning the school supplies arrived and also the financial donations.

Strong Rain poured the afternoon of 24th May 2014 but it never stopped the whole group to go on for the School Supplies distribution to kids affected by typhoon Agaton in Kaplag, Ubaldo Laya, Iligan City.

27 Grade School Pupils and Students benefited the project.

Prior to the distribution, games for the kids were organized and rewarded with school supplies. There were also messages from ALCOTHANS, LAWIG, Liga ng Makabagong Kabataan and Alyansa ng Kabataang Mindanao para sa Kapayapaan to the kids and the parents.

After the distribution, kids took a pose with some representatives of the groups present.
